Apaxon Backups

Available nowFree

A backup you have actually restored.

Scheduled, encrypted, sent off-site, and — the part most plugins skip — verified by restoring it. An untested backup is a belief, not a plan.

What it does.

  • Off-site by default

S3, Backblaze or your own storage. A backup on the same server as the site is not a backup — it is a second copy of the same failure.

  • Encrypted before it leaves

Your database contains customer records. It is encrypted locally, so the storage provider holds ciphertext rather than your customer list.

  • Restore that is rehearsed

Periodic automated restore into a scratch space, so you learn a backup is broken on a Tuesday rather than during an outage.

  • Schedules and retention

Daily, weekly and monthly with independent retention, so a corruption noticed a month later still has something clean behind it.

The uncomfortable part

Most backups fail at restore, not at backup.

Backups run silently for years and are trusted because nothing complained. The first restore is attempted under pressure, and that is when the missing table, the truncated dump or the wrong PHP version is discovered. Verification is the feature; the copying is the easy half.

  • Checksum recorded at write and verified at read
  • A restore that fails raises an alert rather than a log line
  • Database and files versioned separately, so one can be restored without the other

Questions

Where are the encryption keys?

With you. We never hold them, which means we could not restore your backup for you — and equally could not be compelled to hand it to anyone else.

Will it work on shared hosting?

Backups run in chunks with resumable uploads, so a low execution-time limit slows it rather than breaking it.

Can I restore a single file?

Yes. Files and database restore independently, and individual tables can be pulled from a dump without restoring the whole site.
