What it does.
Zones that understand the UK
Highlands, islands and Northern Ireland cost more to reach and are the commonest source of a shipping quote you lose money on. They are zones here, not an afterthought.
Rates by weight, price or item
Bands that stack and combine, so "free over £50 except to the islands" is a rule rather than a compromise.
Live rates where they help
Carrier APIs queried at checkout with a cached fallback, so a slow carrier response shows a sensible rate instead of an empty box.
Tracking the customer gets
A tracking number attached to the order emails the customer automatically. Most "where is my order" enquiries are a tracking link that was never sent.
The failure to avoid
A quote you cannot honour costs more than a lost sale.
Under-quoting shipping is worse than over-quoting: the order is accepted, the margin is gone, and cancelling it costs a customer as well. Rules that model reality — including the awkward postcodes — are worth more than a flat rate that looks tidy.

Questions
What if the carrier API is down?
The last good rate is cached and used, and the checkout continues. A shipping API outage must not stop you taking orders.
Can I print labels?
Label generation is planned. Tracking numbers can be entered or imported today, and the customer is notified either way.
Does it handle collection?
Yes — click and collect is a zone with a zero rate and a different confirmation email.
