Recurring payments that survive a failed card.

Trials, upgrades, downgrades, proration and cancellations — plus the dunning sequence that decides whether a declined card becomes a recovered payment or a lost customer.

What it does.

  • Billing cycles that behave at month end

A subscription started on the 31st bills correctly in February. This sounds trivial and is where most implementations quietly break.

  • Upgrades with proration

Moving plan mid-cycle charges the difference rather than a full second period, so upgrading is not a decision to postpone.

  • Dunning before the cancellation

Card expiring, payment failed, retry scheduled — a sequence sent before access is affected, because most failed payments are an expired card rather than a decision to leave.

  • Customers manage their own

Pause, change plan, update the card and cancel without emailing you. Support requests for a card update are entirely avoidable.

The rule that applies here too

A cancellation is not a deletion.

When a subscription ends, the customer keeps their data and their account. What ends is the service they were paying for. A product that erases someone’s records the moment they stop paying is one nobody can safely start using.

  • Cancelling at period end rather than immediately, by default
  • Data retained and exportable after cancellation
  • Reactivation resumes rather than starting from nothing

Questions

What happens when a card fails?

Retries on a schedule with email at each step. Access ends only after the sequence completes, which recovers a large share of what would otherwise be churn.

Does it work without Commerce?

Yes. A membership or a service retainer does not need a product catalogue, and Subscriptions does not assume one.

Can customers pause instead of cancelling?

Yes, and it is offered before the cancel button. A pause is a customer you keep.
